Timing your Medicare enrollment correctly is one of the most important steps in your healthcare journey. Missing your enrollment windows can lead to delayed coverage and permanent late enrollment penalties.
The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your IEP is a 7-month window that revolves around your 65th birthday. It includes:
- The 3 months before your 65th birthday month.
- The month of your 65th birthday.
- The 3 months after your 65th birthday month.
When Does Coverage Start?
If you enroll during the 3 months before your birthday month, your coverage will begin on the first day of your birthday month. If you enroll during your birthday month or the 3 months after, your coverage start date will be delayed.
What if I am Still Working?
If you or your spouse are still working and you have creditable health coverage through an employer with 20 or more employees, you may be able to delay enrolling in Part B without penalty. You will qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) later when you retire or lose that coverage.
