Turning 65: The Complete Medicare Guide for Arkansas Seniors

Everything you need to know about enrolling in Medicare for the first time, avoiding penalties, and choosing your initial coverage in Arkansas.

Welcome to Medicare: Your Turning 65 Roadmap

Turning 65 is a major milestone, and it's also the most critical time for your healthcare coverage. Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is your first opportunity to enroll in Medicare, and making the right choices now can save you thousands of dollars and prevent lifelong penalties.

When Does Your Initial Enrollment Period Begin?

Your Initial Enrollment Period is a 7-month window that revolves around your 65th birthday:

    • 3 months before the month you turn 65
    • The month you turn 65
    • 3 months after the month you turn 65

    Important Tip

If your birthday falls on the first day of the month, your entire 7-month window shifts one month earlier.

Step 1: Enroll in Original Medicare (Parts A & B)

If you are already receiving Social Security benefits, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B starting the first day of the month you turn 65. If you are not receiving Social Security, you must proactively apply through the Social Security Administration (SSA.gov).

Step 2: Decide on Your Coverage Path

Original Medicare covers about 80% of your approved medical costs. You are responsible for the remaining 20%, with no annual out-of-pocket limit. To protect yourself financially, you have two main options:

    • Option 1: Original Medicare + Medicare Supplement (Medigap) + Part D Prescription Drug Plan
    • Option 2: Medicare Advantage (Part C) Plan which bundles your coverage together

    Avoiding Late Enrollment Penalties

If you don't enroll in Part B and Part D when you are first eligible, and you don't have creditable employer coverage, you may face lifelong penalties added to your monthly premiums.
