Finding dental insurance for seniors in Arkansas usually starts with an unpleasant surprise. Original Medicare does not pay for most routine dental care. Cleanings, fillings, extractions, and dentures generally come out of your own pocket unless you add coverage.

Option one: standalone dental insurance
A standalone dental plan is true insurance, and plans sold directly to consumers in Arkansas are regulated by the Arkansas Insurance Department. You pay a monthly premium, and the plan pays a share of your dental bills.
Most plans are built around a few moving parts. Preventive care like cleanings and exams is often covered at a high percentage. Basic work like fillings is covered at a lower percentage. Major work like crowns, bridges, and dentures is covered at the lowest percentage, often after a waiting period. Every plan also has an annual maximum, the most it will pay in a calendar year.

Option two: dental discount programs
Dental discount programs are not insurance. You pay a membership fee and receive reduced prices from participating dentists. There is usually no annual maximum and no waiting period, but you pay the discounted fee yourself for every visit.
If you have seen senior dental cards or alliance style programs advertised, check whether the product is an insurance policy or a discount membership before you enroll. Both can be useful. They simply solve different problems.
Discount programs tend to work well for people who need a large amount of work right away and do not want to wait out an insurance waiting period. Insurance tends to work better for people who want predictable costs over several years.
Option three: Medicare Advantage
Many Medicare Advantage plans include some level of dental coverage. The benefit varies widely from plan to plan in what services are covered, which dentists are in network, and how much the plan pays in a year.

Option four: Arkansas Medicaid
If you searched for free dental insurance in Arkansas, Medicaid is usually the program you are looking for. Arkansas Medicaid covers dental services for adults up to $500 per year. For adults with certain qualifying special needs, the annual limit increased to $1,000 beginning September 1, 2025.
